Living Greener- 6 Simple Updates

I believe it's been embedded in our heads that living a green life is challenging, time consuming, and expensive.  Here are several minor updates you can incorporate into your everyday living, leading you to a greener lifestyle.  I've included facts to go along with several of the topics.

1.  Laundry/Dishes- Only wash dishes and laundry when you have a full load, and use earth-friendly cleaning products

2.  Household Cleaning - Make your own cleaning products or buy products that are safe for the environment and your home.  Most people are surprised at how affordable these products are.  Many are comparable to those packed with chemicals and toxins.

3.  Natural Skin, Hair, and Body- Try homemmade products, or shop smart and choose products that are safe and good for your body.  If you think of how many chemicals you are exposed to daily just by walking outside, eliminate additional toxins by making the switch to chemical-free products in your home.   Consider the many products you use daily that may consist of harmful contents.  Check the labels on your makeup, toothpaste, deodorant, shower gel, body lotion, and hair products.

4.  Save Carbon by Driving Less and Slower- Complete all your errands in the same neighborhood if possible, and avoid meaningless trips.  Put the car windows down and enjoy a natural breeze sometimes, versus turning the AC on.  Get the most out of your fuel by driving slower, around 55 to 60 miles per hour which is when the car gets its best fuel efficiency.  This of course results in fewer vists to the gas pump.

5.  Recycle and Reuse 'Stuff':  Donate your gently used items to someone that needs/wants them.  Also, if you haven't done so already, check out secondhand, resale, and vintage shops for cool items you can put to great use, and for cheap.  Consider furniture, household accessories, electronics, and of course apparel.

6.  Styrofoam and Plastic Addictions- I know it's common and routine to purchase  paper plates, plastic utensils, and cups for the summer barbecue party or office luncheon. Well, somewhere along that line, we decided to start using these items as daily household necessities.  I'm sure it may save you from having to wash dishes, but the consequences of this decision is more costly.   You are simply adding more waste to the environment, daily, plus spending a significant amount  of money replenishimg these goods.  Eliminate or reduce the use of papertowels, 'throwaway' dishes, and eating utensil in your home.

***Bonus:  Purchase a water bottle and a coffee cup for daily drinks on the go.  Also, get rid of the sandwich bags for the kiddies lunch, and buy containers instead.

Introducing the Kiwi

So, the kiwi originated in China, but is now grown in the US, in addition to a few select countries.  Here in America, the kiwi is pretty easy to find, and also reasonable in price.  Believe it or not, this sweet fruit is jammed pack with vitamin C - even more than that of an orange!  Also contains vitamin E, low in fat, and no cholesterol The two main claims floating around about the kiwi: 1. It's a natural energy booster! 2. It can effectively reduce asthma symptoms, and respiratory problems in general. It reduces heart problems and increases lung function. It has been suggested that a child suffering with asthma conditions can eat one to five kiwis weekly to reduce symptoms. I have personally embraced the kiwi because of the taste, plus it's a convenient snack.  But, now my love for the kiwi has been placed on a higher level.  Okay, that's a little extreme!  But seriously,  it's a fruit to consider trying, and if possible,  introduc...

Self Care- Make it a Habit

Self care habits in progress. I feel so good when I take time out to treat myself. It pleases me  even more when the practice is inexpensive. Polishing my nails, at-home facial, or sometimes a lengthy shower or bath.  It's extremely important to make time for yourself. I know we hear this often, but self care really promotes mental and physical health. If you're having a rough day, challenging week, or simply feeling  overwhelmed or unenthusiastic about circumstances, I strongly urge you to make time for yourself. I find that I am able to think clearer, and my stress levels are reduced significantly after I practice self care.  Sharing a few self care pics below; at home facial, read book alone in the car, or outside in the sun, make a fun (favorite drink) to enjoy alone, or try an at home mani/pedicure. I also find drawing and painting extremely relaxing. Perhaps you can take a walk or get your heart pumping by exercising. Try slower movements with yoga or pilates....

Zinc

Boost your immune system, and start repairing your body internally with zinc.  My (functional medicine) doctor recommended that I incorporate zinc into my diet, by taking a daily supplement, but preferably considering zinc in my food choices.  It was explained that zinc could assist with reversing some of the internal damage of my stomach.  For most of my life, I've been consuming gluten, probably daily, never realizing that it was wreaking havoc on my intestines. In the beginning, I mainly suffered from constipation.   As I got older, bloating and stomach discomfort became a daily thing, along with the constipation.  My stomach issues became my life, and began controlling my life, and even my wardrobe.  Yes, my scarf collection, and flowy tops expanded.   Keeping a scarf on hand daily, in case I needed a cover up for my distended belly.   Then came the hiatal hernia and belching, after almost every meal, and I'd sometimes e...
